52 days to go: The Red Devils’ remarkable rally
FIFA counts down to the World Cup 2026 with a daily statistical story.
Fifty-two years had passed since a team came from two goals down to win a World Cup game until Belgium stunned Japan at Russia 2018. Portugal had been the last, recovering a three-goal deficit to down Korea DPR 5-3 at England 1966. Les Diables Rouges trailed 2-0 with little over 20 minutes to go, but headers from Jan Vertonghen and Marouane Fellaini pulled them level. Then, with a penalty shootout just 28 seconds away, goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois rolled the ball out to Kevin De Bruyne. Eleven seconds later, following a superb counter-attack, Nacer Chadli had it in the back of Eiji Kawashima’s net.
Belgium coach Roberto Martinez said: “There was a question about us in 2018: ‘How will we react when we face adversity?’ And in that Japan game, 2-0 down with just over 20 minutes to go, we found the answer to that question.”
